In order to acquire state-of-the-art science buildings at a lower cost, Yale is moving forward with its announced purchase of the 136-acre Bayer Healthcare Campus. Other schools across the country are also following the trend of local land purchasing, including Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania, and Columbia, but non-Ivy League state schools are also doing so.
A Yale official confirmed that the price for the land would be approximately $100 million, and the initiative is expected to begin this November. At a time when biological research is an accelerating research area, schools have quickly adjusted to property purchasing, in hopes of attracting the high-profile professors and facilities needed to compete in the field.
