Supreme Court Rejects Race-Based School Assignment Process

In a divided 5-4 ruling today, the Supreme Court rejected the use of race as a determining factor in the admissions processes of school boards in Seattle,Washington and Louisville, Kentucky. Though the 2003 ruling concerning the University of Michigan’s enrollment decided race could be a deciding factor in college admissions, the ruling today stated that affirmative action could not be used as a determinant in assigning children to public schools.

Once boasting one of the most infamously rebellious campuses in the country, Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, will close its doors temporarily starting July, 2008. The financial failure of the school is blamed on several contributing factors:
*A small endowment of alumni contributions and gifts.
*Dwindling enrollment. Only 330 students are enrolled for Fall 2007, versus 557 in just 1997. In the 1960s, the school held over 2,000 students.

Today one of the greatest challenges in strategic planning for an institution of higher learning is the struggle that has developed between the “Mission Statement” and “Economic Sustainability”. In the former, management priorities and actions are guided by an adherence to the school’s characteristic values and ideals. In the latter, a school may alter its traditional goals and frequently adapt its curriculum, infrastructure and procedures, in hopes of better meeting market demands.
